April 9, 2008 By Gary Petit ALLIANCE — Senior Meagan Brennan claimed her fifth medalist honors of the season as the 16th-ranked Ohio Northern women’s golf team carded a school record 334 en route to winning the Mount Union Spring Invitational Wednesday at the Tannenhauf Golf Club. The Polar Bears (64-6) bested the previous school mark of 336 set last spring in the second round of the OAC Championships. Walsh finished runner-up with a score of 368 followed by Denison (391), Mount Union (403) and Muskingum (409). Brennan posted a 43-37—80, on the par-72 course, to finish first by two-strokes over teammate Lauren Miller. Miller, playing as an individual, posted a career-low 43-39—82. Senior Amy Gillen tied her career-low with a 44-39—83 to finish in a tie for third. She also shot 83 almost three years to the day, April 10, 2005, also at the Mount Union Inv. Sophomores Megan Russell and Kaylea Thresher finished with rounds of 85 and 86, respectively to finish fifth and sixth. Freshman Ashley Johnson rounded out the Polar Bear five by tying her personal best round with an 87. Persha Ford, also playing as an individual, carded an 86 and turned in the shot of the day. On the par-4, 18th, Ford found herself stymied behind a pine tree, 50 yards from the green, after three strokes. Her fourth shot went under the tree, bounded over a green-side bunker and found its way into the hole for a par. “I’m very pleased with today’s finish,” said ONU head coach Stacey Hairston. “The ladies finally utilized some of the things we have been working on in practice and it paid off as some of them shot or tied their personal-low rounds.” The Polar Bears return home to host the ONU Lady Polar Bears Invitational this weekend, April 12-13, at the Colonial Golfers Club. Action begins both days with an 11 am shotgun start. |
