Feb. 25, 2007 By Tim Glon TUCSON, Ariz. The Ohio Northern softball team opened its 2008 season with a pair of setbacks on the first day of the Tucson Invitational Games Monday at Lincoln Park. The Polar Bears (0-2) fell 9-0 to Concordia (Calif.), who is ranked No. 25 in NAIA, and 7-6 to Rose-Hulman (Ind.) in 8-innings. Concordia improves to 13-3, while Rose-Hulman is now 1-0. Sophomore shortstop Liz Decima led Ohio Northern, going 3-for-6 on the day with a double. She had Northern's only hit in the opener against the Eagles, an infield single in the bottom of the fourth. Against RHIT, Decima was 2-for-4 with a double. Northern rallied from an early 4-0 deficit with three runs in the third and two more in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. But the Engineers would tie the game with a run int he sixth and score two unearned runs in the eighth to go up 8-6. The Polar Bears would get a run of their own in the bottom of the frame when Danielle Goubeaux's one-out ground out scored Cortney Cash to make it 7-6. But ONU was unable to score Lynda Thomas from third with the tying run and RHIT held on for the win. ONU will return to action on Tuesday with games against Division II foe Adams State (Colo.) ands a rematch against Rose-Hulman. |
