April 5, 2008 By Steven Wright MARIETTA The Ohio Northern softball team swept a road doubleheader with Marietta, claiming Game 1 4-1 and winning Game 2 11-1 in five innings, Saturday afternoon at Marietta Field. The Polar Bears improve to 14-6 on the year and 5-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. MC falls to 12-8, 2-4. Cortney Cash (7-3) won Game 1 and Stephanie Inkrott (7-3) won Game 2, allowing four hits and three hits, respectively. Mandi Fought set the single-season stolen base record, swiping two bases in Game 1 and giving her 24 on the season. Fought is now just four career stolen bases away from tying the ONU all-time record. ONU jumped off to fast start in Game 2, scoring the first seven runs of the game. Danielle Goubeaux capped off a five-run first inning with a grand slam, her second home run of the season. Northern got two runs in the second inning when Liz Decima hit a bases loaded single to left field, scoring Lisa Goltry and Fought. The Pioneers broke up the shutout in the bottom of the third, but the Polar Bears responded with four runs in the top of the fifth to complete the NCAA’s eight-run rule. Cortney Cash knocked in ONU’s first run in Game 1 on a single to left field with runners on the corners in the top of the first inning. Abby Majoy picked up an RBI-single in the third inning to score Decima and Jen Smith stole home in fourth inning to complete ONU’s scoring. Goubeaux went 4-for-8 on the afternoon, collecting six RBIs and a run scored, while Decima went 5-for-8 with three runs and two RBIs. Goltry also had a solid day at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three sacrifices. Ohio Northern will host Hiram on Tuesday at 3:30 pm at the ONU Softball Field. |
