March 12, 2008 By Tim Glon DAYTON Senior Kyle Webb won at No. 6 singles and the No. 1 doubles team notched a victory for the Ohio Northern men’s tennis team in a close 6-1 setback at NCAA Division I foe Dayton Wednesday evening at the Dayton Tennis Center. The Polar Bears drop to 2-3 and are 1-1 against Division I foes this season, while the Flyers improve to 8-9. Webb scored the Bears’ point with a 2-6, 6-3, 10-4 victory over Josh Vance at No. 6 singles. Dayton won the doubles point via a tiebreaker, as ONU seniors Micah Scott and Bart Schenck defeated James O’Connell and Matt Sherman 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. Juniors Ryan Paul and Chris Dohner were nipped in a heartbreaker at No. 2 doubles, falling 9-8 (7-4). Northern was highly competitive in the other five singles matches, as Scott was downed 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 spot by O’Connell and Schenck was topped 6-2, 6-4 by Sherman at No. 2. Paul played David Peyton to a 6-2, 7-5 decision, Dohner was edged 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 and senior Todd Anderson was downed 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 5 singles position. The Polar Bears will return to action Friday at NAIA foe Walsh at 1 pm. |
