By Mike Seem BEREA Senior Micah Scott became the all-time career leader in victories and the Ohio Northern men’s tennis team won its seventh match in a row and clinched a share of the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title after beating Baldwin-Wallace 6-3 Wednesday afternoon. With the victory, the Polar Bears improve to 13-4 and 8-0 in the OAC, and Baldwin-Wallace falls to 17-4, 7-1. Seniors Micah Scott and Bart Schenck shutout James Daly and Jim Kucera 8-0 at No. 1 doubles for their 19th victory in doubles competition this season. That victory was the 132nd of Scott's career, making him Ohio Northern's all-time career leader in victories. Scott is 132-46 in his career. He bettered the previous record of 131 wins set by Kevin Dailey from 1998-2001 and by Ryan Burkhart from 1994-97. The doubles victory was also the 71st of his career, breaking the previous record of 70 set by Dailey. Scott is 71-19 in doubles and is 61-27 in singles. This season, Scott is 14-7 in singles, 19-3 in doubles and is 33-10 overall. Juniors Ryan Paul and Chris Dohner won at No. 2 doubles for the 11th time, defeating Tyler Adams and Matt Lauchman 8-4. Senior Thomas Major and freshman Jeff Carter earned an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles over Andy Reed and Zach Long to complete the sweep at doubles. Schenck got off to a rough start at No. 2 singles losing to Adams in the first set 4-6 but bounced back to win the final sets 6-3, 6-2 for his team-leading 14th victory in singles competition. Paul defeated Kucera at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-4 for his 11th victory this season and Dohner wrapped up the scoring for ONU winning at No. 4 singles 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 over Redd. The Polar Bears can clinch the outright OAC regular season title with a victory over Mount Union on Saturday. If ONU loses to Mount Union and Baldwin-Wallace wins the three teams will end the season in a three-way tie for first and the championship will be decided by tiebreakers. The Polar Bears return to action at Mount Union on Saturday at 1p.m. in the last regular season match of the year. |
