ADA — Freshman Phil Makowski matched his career-low with a second straight 74 to finish in a tie for sixth as the Ohio Northern men’s golf team tied for eighth at the 2008 ONU Invitational at the Colonial Golfers Club.

The Polar Bears (47-39-3) carded a 309 on the par 72, 7,050-yard layout, in round two, to finish tied with OAC-foe Heidelberg with a 624 total.

Owens C.C. fired an ONU Invitational record 290 in the second round to win the event with a 590 total, which is also an ONU Invitational record.

Makowski, playing for the ONU “B” team, carded a pair of 74s to post his best finish of the season. Senior Chase Cummings carded a 77 in the second round to finish with a 151 total and tie for 12th.

Junior Ben Kretz and senior Wes Immler also fired rounds of 77 in round two. Kretz carded a 79-77—156 to tie for 26th and Immler shot 80-77—156 to finish tied for 36th.

Freshman Tom Repicky and sophomore Joel Metzker tied for 51st with 161 totals. Repicky carded 83-78 and Metzker posted 78-83.

Juniors Andrew Rahrig and Kevin Duffy each finished with a 162 total to tie for 58th. Senior Brock Prater carded rounds of 85-81—166 to finish tied for 67th and sophomore Paul Morbitzer rebounded from a tough opening round of 87 to post an 80 in round two to finish tied for 70th.

Mount Union’s Lucas Murray, Owens C.C.’s Jason Smith and Heidelberg’s Zack Koinis all finished with ONU Invitational 36-hole records of 146, to tie for first. After a scorecard playoff, Murray walked away with medalist honors.

The Polar Bears will return to action this Thursday and Friday as they host the OAC Championships right back at the Colonial Golfers Club. Tee times start at 10 am both days.
